Jeff,
Frank Moss is interpreting what you said to be a minor difference in power or smoothness. I am interpreting what you said to be a hesitation surge and or poor throttle response. If it is I, that is in-TUNE with you, then my solution is still in order.

On discussions of the Honda Gold Wing group, I noticed mention, of a common problem, of carburetor slides sticking and poor throttle response. I also noticed that their solution was to use 2 ounces of automotive automatic transmission fluid, mixed with 5 gallons of gasoline to free up and condition a sticking carburetor slide in the vacuum operated type of carburetors. This kind of carburetor is called a "constant velocity" and is the same as what the Savage has.

In earlier postings, others here on this Savage forum, use "MARVEL MYSTERY OIL." Both oils (MARVEL and regular AUTOMATIC TRANS. FLUID) will mix with the gasoline and provide excellent cleaning and lubrication of the carburetor slide. Remember .4 oz per gallon of gas. I actually use 1 1/2 oz. in every 3 gallon (full tank) of gas.

You, are probably worried about carboning up the cylinder head with burnt oil and detergent residue. This will not happen with such a small amount of oil. If you dumped in, a lot of oil, of course you would get engine smoke.

I will quote directly from the directions, listed on a bottle of MARVEL MYSTERY OIL:

"MARVEL MYSTERY OIL combats internal motor rust and corrosion, lubricates valves, piston rings and upper cylinder walls and eliminates valve sticking." "Keeps rings free and reduces piston and cylinder wear." "IT ALSO KEEPS FUEL PUMP AND CARBURETOR PARTS CLEAN, ELIMINATING NEED FOR FREQUENT ADJUSTMENTS." "MARVEL MYSTERY oil retards formation of power-dissipating motor deposits, such as gum, varnish and sludge."
"FOR BEST RESULTS ADD 4 OUNCES TO EACH 10 GALLONS OF GASOLINE"
